The Virginia Annual Conference of the former Methodist
Church established a corporation in 1945 to provide care for the aging.
The inspiration for this ministry came from a similar home founded
in 1926 in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
In 1948 The Hermitage in Richmond and the Snyder
Memorial Home (which closed on May 31,1998) were established. This was the beginning
of a long line of Virginia United Methodist retirement communities.
During the 1960's Hermitage in Northern Virginia
and Hermitage on the Eastern Shore were opened and property acquired
for communities in Roanoke and Norfolk. These properties were expanded
and modified to meet the needs of residents over the next 25 years.
With changes in needs and desires of senior
citizens, Virginia United Methodist Homes, Inc began a new era during
the 1990s. The Hermitage at Cedarfield in Richmond was opened in 1996.
The first WindsorMeade residents moved into the Villas in 2007. Windsor Hall opened in 2008.
